Our lawnmowers were somewhere between a hippo and a goat with a dash of Labrador so they’d be good with the kids, and everything was fine. There was hardly any backlash at all before we learned to alter what was already living—before people started changing themselves. Conservative groups started stripping the rights of the altered humans, which brought civil unrest, which brought war. Which, in a way, brought Peter, a boy who will become a hero and in the process a terrible man.
